An Indonesian School that Refused to Pay My Salary

Working as a teacher in Indonesia seems like an easy job for foreigners, but it's not the same for local teachers. Overworked and underpaid are commonly faced by these educators. In addition, schools violate contracts are not rare occurrences.

Some - if the word many cannot be used without evidence - schools terminate teachers, before their contracts end. Indonesian law clearly states that workers who are terminated before its due, shall receive their payment UNTIL the end of the contract. However, some Indonesian schools keep on violating contracts without getting punished.

My Experience Dealing with an Indonesian School which Refused Paying My Salary

Workers whose rights are violated can report it to Disnaker and ask Disnaker to solve it. Disnaker is a government's division that handles workers rights. Unfortunately, Disnaker is not a law enforcement division; therefore, it doesn't have power to punish schools or to investigate the matter further.

Most teachers whose contracts are violated, are usually reluctant to seek justice to disnaker or to the court. Schools always find ways to find faults with the teachers & use them as excuses to weaken them. In addition, the process is long, money & time consuming, without any guarantee they will receive their unpaid salary. At the same time, these educators need to focus on their new jobs as they are still in a probation period in their new schools.

This video is a story about what I faced as a new worker while I was in a legal dispute with my previous school. I didn't push the case further, as I couldn't pay the judge, the court, & a lawyer. It wasn't worth the salary that I didn't receive. While at the same time, I needed to face 'extreme' new colleagues, & I was afraid of losing my new job. I could live on the street if I didn't pass the probation period, so I should let go of my unpaid salary ASAP.
